The Review Process

Scoring

Reasonableness

You thought you could get away with from the classic “Reasonableness” but you can’t. Here at A Lawyer’s Review we will review items and then present you with a “Reasonableness” score (“RS”). Each item’s RS score will be based on core factors applicable to all items. Additional factors may be considered depending on the item, the item’s category, our experience, or something else.

The goal with providing you, the reader, with the RS score is to help you determine whether it is a product your should try, should wait, or should pass on.

Core Factors

Everything reviewed on this website will include consideration of the following core factors: (1) It’s Price, (2) It’s Value, and (3) It’s Practical Fit.

PRICE
Price isn’t everything—but it’s pretty important. I always look at whether the cost makes sense for what you’re getting, especially when compared to similar options. A high price tag needs to be earned, not assumed. I think about the features, build quality, and how useful it really is for lawyers or law students. If something is budget-friendly and performs well, that counts for a lot. If it’s expensive, it better deliver more than just a fancy logo.

Value
Value is about more than just the price tag—it’s what you actually get for your money. I look at how well a product delivers on its promises, how useful it is in real-world legal settings, and whether it holds up over time. A product offers strong value if it performs reliably, feels well made, and solves a real problem—especially if it does all that without unnecessary extras. I compare it to similar options to see if it truly stands out or just blends in. Even a higher-priced item can offer great value if it goes the extra mile.

Practical Fit
Practical fit is all about how well something actually works in real life. I look at whether the item solves a real problem, streamlines a task, or genuinely makes your day smoother—especially for lawyers and law students juggling a lot. It’s not just about features; it’s about whether those features matter in practice. If a product is easy to use, integrates well into a legal workflow, and saves time or frustration, that’s a strong fit. If it adds more hassle than help, no matter how fancy it looks, it misses the mark.

Wildcard Factors

Case-by-Case Basis
We recognize that not every item we review can be judged the same way. Some factors will only be applicable to that one item. While some other factors will be dispositive, others will be worth mentioning, but will have no material impact. So to address this issue, we are going to use the good ol’ “we’ll know it when we see it.”
